An emblem of the Cornish people and national flag and ancient banner of Cornwall is the Saint Piran's Flag. It is regarded by Cornwall Council as the county flag. A distinctive form of Celtic wrestling related to Breton wrestling, and Cornish hurling, a kind of mediaeval football played with a silver ball (distinct from Irish Hurling) are among Cornwall's native sports. Served by ferry (from Penzance) and by aeroplane, having its own airport: St Mary's Airport are the Isles of Scilly.

Council functions throughout the rest of Cornwall were organised in two tiers with a county council and district councils for its six districts, Caradon, Carrick, Kerrier, North Cornwall, Penwith, and Restormel before reorganisation on 1 April 2009. Popular destinations for surfers are Newquay and Porthtowan. Though the same claim has been made for Penzance which is larger, the westernmost town in England is St Just in Penwith.

Between St Mary's and Land's End Airport, near St Just, and Newquay Airport, there are regular flights; a service is also provided between St Mary's and Exeter Airport, in Devon during the summer season. Truro is Cornwall's only city and the address of the council centre of operations. Notable as a port is nearby Falmouth. A white cross on a black background in terms of heraldry 'sable, a cross argent' is the banner of Saint Piran.

The centre of the china clay industry in Cornwall and was the County's largest town, more populous than the capital Truro is St Austell. Cornwall itself has several lively inter-Celtic festivals such as Perranporth's Lowender Peran folk festival and Cornish players are regular participants in inter-Celtic festivals. There is little evidence and few Roman remains have been found that Roman rule was effective west of Exeter in Devon. Including one Marcus Cunomorus with at least one significant power base at Tintagel, Cornwall, however, appears to have reverted to rule by Romano-Celtic chieftains of the Cornovii tribe as part of Dumnonia after 410.

With a major tourism and leisure sector in their economies, St Ives and Padstow are today small vessel ports. Significant as centres of the global tin mining industry in the 19th century, and form the largest urban area in Cornwall were Redruth and Camborne; also very productive during that period were nearby copper mines. With a series of granite intrusions such as Bodmin Moor, which contains the highest land within Cornwall, the interior of the county consists of a roughly east-west spine of infertile and exposed upland.

Regarded as a close relative of King Arthur himself, he is usually considered to be born of the Cornish people in folklore traditions derived from Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, King Mark of Cornwall is a semi-historical figure known from Tristan and Yseult. In September 2017, there are three further education colleges which opened: Truro and Penwith College, Cornwall College and Callywith College.
